What changed
What changed with the Genuine Student rule
The old GTE test asked whether you intended to return home, and wanting to stay could sink your application. That pushed honest students into writing things they did not mean.
The Genuine Student rule replaced it in March 2024 and asks a different question: is this course a sensible step in your career?
So wanting to work in Australia afterwards, or eventually settle, no longer disqualifies you. What matters is that your course choice, your background and your stated goals actually connect. Full detail on the Genuine Student guide.

The bridge visa
The 485 post-study work visa
The Temporary Graduate visa, subclass 485, is the bridge between graduating and anything else. It lets you stay and work full-time after your degree, generally for two to four years depending on your qualification and where you studied.

The age cap was cut from 50 to 35.
If you are near or above 35 at graduation, this pathway may already be closed to you. Better to know that before you spend anything.
Regional study can extend your stay,
and some regional locations offer additional time on the 485.
If the 485 is central to your plan, work out your age at graduation before you choose a course length. A two-year Master's starting at 34 is a different decision from the same course at 26.

How to get PR in Australia after study
There is no automatic path. Nobody moves from a student visa to permanent residency by finishing a degree.
The realistic sequence, for most people:

Finish your qualification.

Move onto the 485 and get skilled work experience in your field, not just any job.

Get a skills assessment from the assessing authority for your occupation.

Score enough points in the points-tested skilled migration system, where your age, English, qualifications, work experience and sometimes state nomination all count.

Be invited to apply, which depends on how your score compares to everyone else in your occupation that round.
Step 5 is the part that gets glossed over. Meeting the minimum points does not get you PR. You are competing against every other applicant in your occupation, and the effective cut-off in popular occupations often runs far above the minimum.

The honest segmentation
Study and settle in Australia: who this actually works for
It works most reliably for students who:
- are young enough that age points still work in their favour, and who will be under 35 at graduation
- study something on a skilled occupation list that they can genuinely work in
- reach a strong English score, since English is worth substantial points
- get real, assessable work experience during the 485 period
- are willing to consider regional study and regional employment, where the competition is lower
It works poorly for students who pick a course purely because it appears on a list, without the background or the interest to work in that field afterwards. That shows up twice: first as a weak Genuine Student story at the visa stage, then as an unusable skills assessment years later.

Some fields sit on in-demand occupation lists more consistently than others: nursing, IT, engineering, accounting, and data-related fields among them.

No course, university or consultancy can guarantee you permanent residency. Anyone who does is either misinformed or selling you something, and the promise will not survive contact with a case officer either.
What is genuinely available: a good degree, two to four years of Australian professional experience, and a fair shot at a competitive points system. For a lot of students that combination is worth it even if PR never comes, because the degree plus Australian work experience changes what you can earn back home too.
