IELTS for Australia: The Band Score You Actually Need
Here is the number Pakistani applicants need, first, without the build-up.
Most courses: IELTS 6.5 overall. Nursing, teaching and several health courses: 7.0 overall.
Now the part that catches people out, which is not the overall score at all.

Two separate things are being assessed, and confusing them is common. The university sets an entry requirement for your course. The Department of Home Affairs has its own requirement for the visa. Meeting one does not automatically satisfy the other, and where they differ, the higher bar wins.
The part that catches people out
The individual band minimum, which is what actually fails people
Most universities do not only look at your overall score. They set a minimum in each of the four sections, commonly 6.0 for a 6.5 course.
So an applicant with 7.5 in reading, 7.0 in listening, 6.5 in speaking and 5.5 in writing has an overall band of 6.5 and is still rejected, because writing came in under the section minimum.
This is the most common English-related surprise we see, and it changes how you should prepare. Your weakest section decides your outcome, not your average.

Other accepted tests
PTE, TOEFL and other accepted tests
PTE Academic and TOEFL are accepted by most Australian universities and by the Department of Home Affairs alongside IELTS. Cambridge and OET are accepted in some contexts, OET particularly for health professions.
This is not the complete official list and acceptance varies by institution, so confirm with your university and against current Department of Home Affairs guidance before you book anything.
Choosing a format
IELTS vs PTE: which to choose
Neither is inherently easier. They fail people in different places.
IELTS
Has wider test-centre availability across Pakistan and is the format most students have already prepared for. Speaking is with a human examiner, which suits some candidates and unsettles others. Results typically take longer.
PTE
Is fully computer-based and scored by algorithm, including the speaking section, which some students find far less stressful and others find harder to satisfy. Results come back faster, often within days, which matters if you are up against an intake deadline.
Choose on two grounds: which format suits how you actually perform, and what is genuinely available near you within your timeline.
The exceptions
Can you study in Australia without IELTS?
For most applicants, no, not in any general sense.
Narrow exceptions exist, mainly for students whose prior study was fully in English-medium instruction, and for certain university pathway programs with their own arrangements. These are real, but they are specific and they change.

How to prepare, given the band minimum
Diagnose first.
Sit a full practice test under real timing before you plan anything. You need to know which section is your weakest, because that is the one that decides your result.
Spend your time unevenly.
Most students over-practise their strongest skill because it feels productive. Put the hours into the weak section.
Writing is usually the weak section
for Pakistani candidates, and it is the slowest to improve. If writing is your gap, start earlier than you think you need to.
Book realistically.
Give yourself enough time to retake once without missing your intake. Working backwards from February or July, that means testing months earlier than most students do.
Not a dead end
If your score falls short
It is not a dead end, and it is not a reason to look for a way around the requirement.
Retake.
Often the fastest route, particularly if you missed on one section.
Foundation and pathway programs.
A longer route with a lower English entry point, leading into the same degrees. Legitimate, structured, and not a lesser option, though it adds time and cost.
English language courses (ELICOS)
attached to a university offer, which some institutions package with a conditional offer.
What not to do: chase a university that appears to have no English requirement in the hope the visa follows. Your English is assessed at the visa stage too, and a weak result there is a refusal, not a technicality.
