Public Health in Australia: Fees, Entry Requirements and Fit

Public health suits health and life-science backgrounds, with varied occupation relevance.

Varied is the honest word. It is not nursing's clear occupation-list connection, and it does not carry nursing's IELTS 7.0 or clinical-placement load. Do not pick it as a quieter version of that pathway.

What public health costs

Health sciences and engineering sit at the higher end of the hub band; business and arts sit at the lower.

For a Bachelor's degree, roughly AUD 32,500 to 43,500 a year, regional universities at the lower end and Group of Eight at the higher. An estimate built on the same field, level and tier logic as the cost calculator, not an official fee. Diploma and Master's programmes move that range down or up.

Add living costs of AUD 29,710 for year one, OSHC, and the AUD 2,500 visa fee.

Entry requirements

English: IELTS 6.5 overall is standard for most courses, including public health. Nursing is the field that typically needs 7.0. Individual band minimums still apply. See the IELTS guide.

Background: the field suits health and life-science backgrounds. Universities still set their own academic rules. A health degree is not a free pass, and an unrelated degree is not automatically blocked.

PR relevance, without the overclaim

Occupation relevance is varied. Nursing and allied health appear among the fields that show up most consistently on skilled occupation lists. Public health is not the same claim as nursing.

Demand helps a longer-term plan. It should not decide the course on its own. See the PR guide and best courses for PR.

Is this field right for you?

Public health suits students whose prior study or work is already in health or the life sciences, and who want a population-level qualification rather than a clinical registration pathway.

It does not suit students treating it as nursing without the IELTS 7.0 or placements, or reaching for a health label from an unrelated degree because allied health sits on occupation lists.

Your course choice is assessed. A case officer will look at what you studied, what you have done, and what you are applying for, and ask whether they connect. See the Genuine Student guide.

Common questions

01What IELTS score do I need for public health in Australia?

02How much does a public health degree in Australia cost?

Health sciences sit at the higher end of the tuition range, with engineering. Use the cost calculator for your total.

03Is public health the same as nursing?

No. Nursing has IELTS 7.0, clinical placements, and one of the clearest occupation-list connections. Public health suits health and life-science backgrounds, with varied occupation relevance.

No. Occupation relevance is varied. Allied health appears with nursing on high-demand lists. Public health is not the same claim as nursing.
