Work out your cost

Fetching the live AUD to PKR rate…

Confirm the live rate before you commit to anything, because it will have moved.

What is included

  • Tuition, estimated from your field, your course level and the tier of university, since a Group of Eight institution and a regional university are not close on price.
  • Living costs, built from the AUD 29,710 the visa requires you to prove, adjusted for the city you pick.
  • OSHC, the compulsory health cover, roughly AUD 800 to 1,000 a year.
  • The visa fee, AUD 2,500, non-refundable.

What is not included, and should be in your plan

Flights. Your health examination. HEC attestation and document costs. Setup costs in your first fortnight, which are always higher than expected. Personal spending. Anything for dependents travelling with you.

And a buffer. Add 10 to 15% on top of whatever the calculator gives you, because the rupee to dollar rate will move between now and when you actually pay.

How the estimate is built

Tuition is derived from three inputs rather than pulled from a single average: the field, the level, and the university tier. Health sciences cost more than business. A Master's usually costs more per year than a Bachelor's. A flagship university costs more than a regional one.

That is why the number should land close to a real offer even before you have one. It is an estimate built on consistent logic, not an invoice, and your actual offer letter is the only figure that binds anyone.

A budget is not the same as proof of funds

This is the part that catches families who genuinely have the money.

Your visa application does not just ask whether you can afford it. It asks where the money came from. A balance that appears shortly before you apply, with no history behind it, is one of the most common reasons applications are refused, regardless of the amount.

Before you move any money between accounts, read the financial requirements guide. Funds history cannot be built retroactively.

If the number is higher than you expected

Most families find it is. Three honest levers, in order of how much they actually move the total:

City and university tier. The largest single saving available. Regional universities charge less and cost less to live in, and some locations carry migration points advantages. See the cheapest universities guide and the city guides.
Course level and pathway. A diploma or pathway program with credit transfer into a degree lowers the first-year outlay significantly.
Scholarships. Worth applying for, and worth not depending on. Partial fee reductions are far more common than full funding. See the scholarships page.

One thing that is not a lever: picking the cheapest course you can find with no connection to your background. It saves money at the admission stage and costs you at the visa stage, because course choice is assessed. The GS guide explains how.

Common questions

01Is the cost calculator free?

Yes, and you see the full breakdown without giving us any contact details.

02How much does it cost to study in Australia from Pakistan in total?

Roughly AUD 53,000 to 78,000 for year one across tuition, living funds, OSHC and the visa fee. In rupees, it depends on the rate. Full breakdown on the cost of studying page.

03Is the AUD 29,710 money I actually spend?

It is the amount you must prove you have for living costs in year one. What you actually spend depends on your city and how you live.

04Does the calculator use today's exchange rate?

Yes, and it will still move. Budget a 10 to 15% buffer.

05Are these official university fees?

No. They are estimates built from course field, level and university tier. Your offer letter is the official figure.

Once you know the number

The next question is whether your funds will hold up under scrutiny, which is a different problem from having them.
