The other comparison
Regional universities, and why they are often the better call
Regional institutions charge less, sit in cheaper cities, and some of their locations carry additional migration points that metro study does not.
For a lot of students the honest comparison is not "Go8 or regional". It is "a Go8 degree with a stretched budget and a strained funds trail" against "a regional degree, a comfortable budget, and a stronger visa file". The second one is approved more often.
See the cheapest universities guide and the city guides.
Processing
Your university choice affects your visa, not just your degree
This is the part almost nobody explains.
The Department of Home Affairs rates institutions on their compliance record. Universities with a strong record get faster, more streamlined processing, commonly 4 to 8 weeks. Institutions with a weaker record trigger closer manual review, and applications tied to them take longer and face more scrutiny.
It is a judgement about the institution, not about you, but it lands on your timeline. The university risk rating guide explains how it works and what it does and does not mean for your own odds.
Provider rating is one input. It is not a league table of your personal odds.
Getting in
Entry requirements, in general
Expect a solid academic record and IELTS 6.5 overall for most courses, 7.0 for nursing, teaching and several health courses, with individual band minimums set per institution.
Requirements vary by course as much as by university, so a strong university can have an accessible course and a mid-ranked one can have a selective programme. Check per course, not per institution.
Australian universities without IELTS: a small number of institutions accept alternative evidence of English, usually prior study fully in English-medium instruction, or their own pathway programs. This is narrower than it is often presented. Read studying without IELTS before planning around it.
Cost
Fees
Broadly AUD 20,000 to 45,000 a year, with Go8 institutions at the higher end and regional universities meaningfully lower for comparable courses.
Get your own number in rupees with the cost calculator, or read the full cost breakdown.
When
Intakes
Almost all institutions run February and July intakes, and some offer additional trimester starts. Work backwards 6 to 9 months from your target. See the intakes guide.
In this order
Choosing well
Three questions, in this order:
- Will they admit me? Check your grades and English against the actual course requirements, not the university's reputation.
- Can I afford it without straining my funds trail? A budget stretched to its limit shows up as a weak financial file at the visa stage.
- Does this course make sense for someone with my background? Course coherence is assessed. See the Genuine Student guide.
