Data Science in Australia: Fees, Entry Requirements and Fit
Data science is fast growing, and often a strong fit for maths, statistics or computing backgrounds.
It sits with data-related fields that appear most consistently on skilled occupation lists. Fast growth is not a reason to pick it without a background that makes the course look like a continuation.

Fees
What data science costs
Tuition moves with three things: the field, the level, and the university tier.
For a Bachelor's degree, roughly AUD 25,500 to 34,000 a year, regional universities at the lower end and Group of Eight at the higher. An estimate built on the same field, level and tier logic as the cost calculator, not an official fee. Diploma and Master's programmes move that range down or up.
Add living costs of AUD 29,710 for year one, OSHC, and the AUD 2,500 visa fee.
Living costs, OSHC and the visa fee included.
Getting in
Entry requirements
English: IELTS 6.5 overall is standard for most courses, including data science. Individual band minimums still apply. See the IELTS guide.
Background: the field is often a strong fit for maths, statistics or computing. Universities still set their own academic rules, so a computing degree is not a free pass and a non-quantitative degree is not automatically blocked.
Additional field-specific academic prerequisites are coming soon, from verified seed data.
Always confirm current requirements directly with the university.

Universities offering data science
A list of partner institutions offering data science, with campuses and intakes, is coming soon.
Compare institutions on the university pages, and cities on the city guides. Check the specific programme, not just whether the campus teaches something in IT.
After study
PR relevance, without the overclaim
Data science appears most consistently on skilled occupation lists alongside nursing, IT, engineering, accounting, allied health, teaching and several trades. Data-related fields also sit in the high-demand group on the courses hub.
That is relevance, not a guarantee. You still need to graduate, get skilled work, pass a skills assessment, and compete for an invitation. See the PR guide and best courses for PR.
Honest fit
Is this field right for you?
Data science suits students whose prior study or work is already quantitative: maths, statistics, or computing. Fast growth is a reason to look closely, not a reason to ignore that background.
It does not suit students treating it as a quieter version of IT, or commerce graduates reaching for a technical label without a story. Commerce students wanting a technical edge more often look at business analytics.
Your course choice is assessed. A case officer will look at what you studied, what you have done, and what you are applying for, and ask whether they connect. See the Genuine Student guide.
Common questions
01What IELTS score do I need for data science in Australia?
IELTS 6.5 overall is standard for most courses, including data science. Individual band minimums still apply, so check the specific programme.
02How much does a data science degree in Australia cost?
Tuition moves with the field, the level, and the university tier. Roughly AUD 20,000 to 45,000 a year. Use the cost calculator for your total.
03Do I need a maths or computing background?
Data science is often a strong fit for maths, statistics or computing backgrounds. An unexplained jump from an unrelated field is a common weak point at the visa stage.
04Does studying data science guarantee PR in Australia?
No. Data science appears among the fields that show up most consistently on skilled occupation lists. List presence helps. It is not a guarantee.
05Is data science the same as IT?
IT is the largest field by applicant numbers from Pakistan. Data science is fast growing and often a better match if your background is maths, statistics or computing rather than general IT.
06Can I switch into data science from commerce?
You can if the switch is explainable. Commerce graduates wanting a technical edge more often look at business analytics. An unexplained field change is a common refusal reason.
