Accounting in Australia: Fees, Entry Requirements and Fit
Accounting has a long-standing occupation-list presence, and professional accreditation requirements you need to check carefully before you enrol.
The list presence is real. It is not a shortcut around accreditation, a Genuine Student story, or invitation competition. Trades are often less competitive at the invitation stage than IT or accounting.

Fees
What accounting costs
Tuition moves with three things: the field, the level, and the university tier.
For a Bachelor's degree, roughly AUD 18,500 to 25,000 a year, regional universities at the lower end and Group of Eight at the higher. An estimate built on the same field, level and tier logic as the cost calculator, not an official fee. Diploma and Master's programmes move that range down or up.
Add living costs of AUD 29,710 for year one, OSHC, and the AUD 2,500 visa fee.
Living costs, OSHC and the visa fee included.
Getting in
Entry requirements
English: IELTS 6.5 overall is standard for most courses, including accounting. Individual band minimums still apply. See the IELTS guide.
Accreditation: professional accreditation requirements have to be checked carefully before enrolling. A course that looks like accounting on the university website is not automatically the course a skills assessment will accept.
Additional field-specific academic prerequisites are coming soon, from verified seed data.
Always confirm current requirements directly with the university.

After study
PR relevance, without the overclaim
Accounting has a long-standing presence on Australia's skilled occupation lists. That is a genuine advantage if migration is part of your longer-term plan.
It is also more competitive at the invitation stage than trades often are. You still need to graduate, get skilled work, pass a skills assessment, and compete for an invitation. See the PR guide and best courses for PR.
Honest fit
Is this field right for you?
Accounting suits students whose prior study or work makes a professional accounting pathway look like a continuation, and who will check accreditation before they enrol.
It does not suit students treating a long-standing occupation-list presence as a guarantee, or skipping the accreditation check because the university name is familiar.
Your course choice is assessed. A case officer will look at what you studied, what you have done, and what you are applying for, and ask whether they connect. See the Genuine Student guide.
Common questions
01What IELTS score do I need for accounting in Australia?
IELTS 6.5 overall is standard for most courses, including accounting. Individual band minimums still apply, so check the specific programme.
02How much does an accounting degree in Australia cost?
Tuition moves with the field, the level, and the university tier. Roughly AUD 20,000 to 45,000 a year. Use the cost calculator for your total.
03Do I need professional accreditation as well as the degree?
Yes, you need to check professional accreditation requirements carefully before enrolling. The degree alone is not the whole picture.
04Does studying accounting guarantee PR in Australia?
No. It has a long-standing occupation-list presence, which helps, and it is more competitive at the invitation stage than trades often are.
05Is accounting less competitive than IT?
Trades and technical qualifications are often less competitive at the invitation stage than IT or accounting. Accounting is not a quiet occupation.
06Can I switch into accounting from an unrelated degree?
You can, but the switch has to be explainable. An unexplained field change is a common refusal reason at the visa stage.
