How to Apply to Study in Australia From Pakistan
No pitch on this page. The actual sequence, in order, with the timing, so you can see the whole thing before you start any of it.
Plan on 6 to 9 months from first enquiry to landing. Students who compress it into three usually pay for it somewhere, most often in a rushed Genuine Student statement.
Free, four minutes. It is the cheapest step in the whole process and the only one that can save you the other eight.
Step 1
Check your eligibility before you spend anything
Everything after this costs money or time. This step costs neither.
Get an honest read on your academic fit, your English, your funds and your Genuine Student story. If there is a serious gap, you want to find it now, not after you have paid a deposit and a AUD 2,500 visa fee.
If you are coming straight out of intermediate or FSc, the route differs slightly. See studying in Australia after 12th.
Step 2
Choose your course and university
Pick for fit, not for fame. Three filters, in this order: what you can get into with your grades and English, what you can afford, and what actually connects to your background and your plans.
That third filter is not a nice-to-have. A course that does not follow from your history is the most common reason applications are refused later.
Free. Filters by grades, English score and budget instead of showing you 500 options.
Compare specifics on the course pages, the university pages and the city guides.
Timing: allow 2 to 4 weeks to shortlist properly.
Step 3
Apply for admission and get your offer letter
How to get admission in Australia, in practice: you apply directly to each university, or through an agent, with your academic transcripts, your English result, your passport, and usually a statement of purpose.
Most universities accept applications to several courses. Applying to three or four with different entry requirements is sensible; applying to twelve is not, and it makes your story harder to keep consistent.
You receive a conditional offer if something is outstanding, usually your English score or final transcripts, or an unconditional offer if everything is in place.
Read the offer properly. It sets out your course, your fees, your start date and your conditions.
Timing: commonly 2 to 6 weeks per university, longer at peak.
Step 4
Accept, pay the deposit, and get your CoE
Accept the offer and pay the required tuition deposit. The university then issues your Confirmation of Enrolment, the CoE.
The CoE is the document that unlocks the visa application. You cannot lodge without it. You will also arrange OSHC around this point, since your visa needs health cover for the full length of your stay.
Timing: a few days to two weeks after your deposit clears.
Step 5
Prepare your Genuine Student statement
The step that decides more outcomes than the other seven combined.
You answer specific questions inside your ImmiAccount application, each capped at 150 words. They test whether your course is a sensible step in your career, whether you researched it properly, and whether you can fund it without relying on part-time work.
Do not leave this until the week you lodge. Read the Genuine Student guide first, then write it.
Guided prompts that flag generic answers before a case officer does.
Timing: give it 1 to 2 weeks, not an evening.
Step 6
Gather and verify your documents
You will generally need:
- Passport
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates, HEC-verified
- IELTS or PTE result
- Offer letter and CoE
- OSHC policy
- Financial documents: bank statements, sponsor income evidence, FBR returns where the sponsor is self-employed
- Sponsor letters and relationship evidence
- Previous visa history, including any refusals from any country
Having them is not the same as them holding up. Names, dates and figures must match across every document and match your statement. See the document checklist and verification guide.
Timing: start HEC attestation early. It is the item most likely to delay you.
Step 7
Lodge your subclass 500 visa application
Create your ImmiAccount, complete the application, upload everything, complete health examinations with a panel physician, provide biometrics if asked, and pay the AUD 2,500 fee.
Before you submit, read every answer against your documents one final time. Most fixable errors are caught in this last pass.
Full requirements on the student visa guide.
Step 8
Wait, and prepare in case you are interviewed
Not everyone is interviewed. If you are, it usually means something needs clarifying, not that you have done something wrong.
Respond to any request for further information quickly, since delays here are one of the few things fully within your control. See the interview preparation guide.
The full timeline
How long does it take to get an Australia student visa?
The visa decision itself commonly takes 4 to 8 weeks for straightforward applications at universities with a strong compliance record. Files needing further checks run longer, sometimes considerably. Why that varies is explained on the university risk rating guide.
The whole process, end to end:
| Stage | Realistic time |
|---|---|
| Shortlisting course and university | 2 to 4 weeks |
| Admission applications and offers | 2 to 6 weeks |
| Deposit and CoE | up to 2 weeks |
| GS statement and document preparation | 3 to 6 weeks |
| Visa processing | 4 to 8 weeks, sometimes longer |
| Total | roughly 4 to 6 months, so start 6 to 9 months out |
When to start
Intakes and when to start
Australian universities run two main intakes: February, the larger one, and July. Some institutions on a trimester system offer additional starts.
Work backwards. For a February intake, be starting seriously by the previous May or June. For July, by the previous October or November. Full detail on the intakes guide.
Common questions
01How do I apply to study in Australia from Pakistan?
Check your eligibility, choose a course, apply for admission, accept the offer and pay a deposit, get your CoE, write your Genuine Student statement, prepare and verify documents, then lodge the subclass 500 visa through ImmiAccount.
02How do I get admission in an Australian university?
Apply directly or through an agent with your transcripts, English result and passport. Most offers turn on your academic record and your English band.
03How long does the Australia student visa take?
Commonly 4 to 8 weeks after lodgement, with the full journey running 4 to 6 months.
04Can I apply without an agent?
Yes. Plenty of students apply directly. The parts where people most often want help are the Genuine Student statement and the financial documentation, which are also the two things that cause most refusals.
05When should I start for a February intake?
By the previous May or June, so that a delay at any stage does not cost you the intake.
06What if my offer is conditional?
Meet the condition, usually an English score or final transcripts, and the university converts it to unconditional before issuing your CoE.
07Do I need the full tuition upfront?
No. Universities normally require a deposit, often the first semester's tuition, before issuing the CoE. Your visa still requires proof of funds for the year.
No cost, no commitment
Start with the step that costs nothing
Every other step commits money. This one does not.
